Lifelong Learners

At the discretion of the instructor in charge, Lifelong (age 55 & older) and Veteran Learners may visit CSU resident instruction (RI) classes on a space available basis at no tuition cost. Course fees (i.e. transportation expenses, breakage fees, consumable supplies associated with labs, etc…) as published in the class schedule will be assessed to visitors.

How to Become a Lifelong Learner at CSU:

  1. The Learner should choose a class from the current class schedule.

  2. The Learner then must read and complete the applicable form (found at the bottom of this page).

  3. The Learner must obtain approval for the visitation at the office of the academic department offering the course. This may require contacting the instructor involved. Have the department or instructor sign the Visitation Request form approving your visitation.
    1. The instructor’s information can be found linked in the Class Schedule of the course they wish to take (email only).
    2. Once permission is granted, the Learner should attend the class if permission is granted.

  4. The Learner will be provided with a CSU ID from the academic department’s HR liaison of the course being taken.
    1. This is also how the student will receive Canvas access.

  5. The Learner can return the completed form, including the instructor signature, to The Hub by email at [email protected], or in person to Room 175 in the Lory Student Center on the first floor (or to the Office of the Registrar by email at [email protected]), no later than the end of the term.

  6. The Learner will need access to Canvas and other electronic resources/services. The Learner will work directly with the department for access to receive a CSU ID. The Learner will use this CSU ID to create a NetID. Repeat Learners should provide this CSU ID on their request form to allow the instructor/department the opportunity to provide NetID access when permission is granted.
Policies:
  • Lifelong Learners must be 55 years of age or older.
    • However, if they turn 55 by the end of the term they start as a Lifelong Learner, it will be at the departments discretion on whether or not to accept.
  • Learner students are considered RI (on campus students). CSU Online does not offer the Lifelong or Veteran Learner program.

  • It is only with the approval of the instructor on whether or not they will accept Lifelong and Veteran Learner students into their courses.

  • In order for our office to accept the Learner application form, the Learner must have been provided a CSU ID. Learner students can receive a CSU ID from the department HR liaison (the department of the course being taken). This is also how the student will receive Canvas access.

  • Approval for visitation can be obtained prior to the first day of class, however, privileges may be revoked to allow for degree-seeking students and other tuition paying students to attend the class.

  • Neither academic credits nor grades will be assigned or awarded upon completion of the visitation nor will a record of participation be maintained by the University.

  • Class participation and grading of assignments and tests will be at the discretion of the instructor.

  • Students can take as many Lifelong Learner courses they wish as long as they are accepted by the department and the instructor and have completed Lifelong Learner forms for each course.

  • CSU Online Courses are not available to the Lifelong or Veteran Learner program.
